Huon Pine Skatedeck by Noddy Boffin – Resident and Tutor, Elliot Gorham.

The Huon pine Lagarostrobos franklinii is a conifer and is endemic to Tasmania. It is the only member of the genus Lagarostrobos. Related species from the family Podocarpaceae, originating from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, are found in Chile, Malaysia and New Zealand.

The Huon pine is Australia’s oldest living tree and is one of the oldest living organisms on earth. Individuals have been known to reach an age of 3,000 years. Fossil records from a tree found in the south-west of Tasmania were dated at 3,462 years. (Carder A., 1995). Only the bristle-cone pine of North America exceeds it in age.

Being a lord of Dogtown is one thing, but becoming a lord of the workshop is something else entirely.

Handsome & Co., Melbourne’s school of furniture design and fine woodworking, are hosting their very first bespoke skate deck workshop. If you’ve ever wanted to craft your own custom skate longboard, here’s your chance.

Over two three-hour sessions, you’ll will be guided through the entire process starting from scratch and hopefully ending in kick-flips. You’ll be laminating and shaping layers of Canadian Maple veneer (Canadian Maple being the wood of choice for skateboard manufacturers since time immemorial) and skinning the board with a selection of bespoke timber veneers including Walnut, Sassafras, Myrtle and Oak.

Make sure you walk or take a tram because with a bit of luck, you’ll be skating home.
